Anti-diabetic effects<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Several pre-clinical (in animals) and clinical (in humans) trials showed a blood glucose lowering effect for A. vera <\/em>gel preparations in different forms (e.g. juice or as constituents in bread etc.), while other studies indicated that no change in glucose levels could be obtained. The differences in results of these in vivo <\/em>studies can possibly be explained by differences in the way that the aloe mucilaginous gel was isolated and separated from the exudate anthraquinones. Furthermore, it is not always clear what constituent of the aloe leaf was tested in some studies, which makes it difficult to correlate the effect (or lack of effect) with the product tested [17,38].<\/p>\n

In a study on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, oral administration of A. vera <\/em>gel (alcohol insoluble residue extract) significantly reduced the fasting blood glucose, hepatic transaminases, plasma and tissue cholesterol, triglicerides, free fatty acids and phospholipids and in addition also significantly increased plasma insulin levels. The decreased plasma levels of high density lipoprotein cholesterol and increased levels of low density lipoprotein cholesterol in the streptozotocin-induced rats were restored to normal after treatment with gel extract [40].<\/p>\n

From the findings of another study on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, it was suggested that the mechanism of action of A. vera <\/em>extracts to reduce blood glucose levels is by enhancing glucose metabolism. It was further proposed that the glucose lowering effect could be explained by an antioxidant mechanism because it attenuated oxidative damage in the brains of streptozotocin-induced mice and reduced peroxidation levels in the kidneys of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats [14].<\/p>\n

Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n

Diabetes mellitus type 2 with dyslipidemia is a common disease. Previous studies suggest that aloe (Aloe vera L.) leaf gel may positively affect the blood glucose and lipid levels in dyslipidemic type 2 diabetic patients. Thus, in this randomized double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial with hyperlipidemic (hypercholesterolemic and\/or hypertriglyceridemic) type 2 diabetic patients aged 40 to 60 years not using other anti-hyperlipidemic agents and resistant to daily intake of two 5 mg glyburide tablets and two 500mg metformin tablets, the efficacy and safety of taking aloe gel (one 300 mg capsule every 12 hours for 2 months) combined with the aforementioned drugs in treatment of 30 patients were evaluated and compared with the placebo group (n = 30). The aloe gel lowered the fasting blood glucose, HbA1c, total cholesterol, and LDL levels significantly (p = 0.036, p = 0.036, p = 0.006, and p = 0.004, respectively) without any significant effects on the other blood lipid levels and liver\/kidney function tests (p > 0.05) compared with the placebo at the endpoint. No adverse effects were reported.
